2021 New Questions and New Answers in the 21st Century with Dr. Rob Snyder

New Amsterdam, New Netherland and Dutch New York

As Manhattan Borough Historian I continuously learn new things about my home borough and city, and some of the most interesting illuminate the Dutch in New  York. Thanks to translations of Dutch sources, and inquiries by researchers ranging from genealogists to archaeologists, historians are asking and answering new questions about the Dutch presence in the Americas. Their inquiries have illuminated everything from religion to slavery to the roles of women in the Dutch Atlantic, transforming our understanding of New Amsterdam and New Netherland in ways that better help us understand the past and present.

Robert W. Snyder is Manhattan Borough Historian and professor emeritus of journalism and American Studies at Rutgers University-Newark. Among his many books, he is the author of Crossing Broadway: Washington Heights and the Promise of New York and the coauthor of All the Nations Under Heaven: Immigrants, Migrants and the Making of New York. He has written for scholarly journals, newspapers and magazines, and worked with museums and the media to share history with the public. A former Fulbright lecturer in American Studies in Korea and a member of the New York Academy of History, he lives in Manhattan.

This event is free and open to the public. If you can, donations are welcome!
