April 23, 2024

The Holland Society of New York is pleased to announce the inaugural Junior Fellowship award, a fellowship designed to commence in September 2024 and conclude in August 2025. In an effort to promote and support new research about New Netherland, the Junior Fellowship is for a degree candidate who, at the time of application, has fulfilled all preliminary requirements for their terminal degree and are in the process of writing their dissertation.

The dissertation’s topic should be related to New Netherland, but does not need to involve the translation of text and records. The ideal junior fellowship candidate has an interesting or unexplored angle on the field of New Netherland studies and the legacy of New Netherland.

“Since our founding in 1885, the Holland Society has been committed to scholarship,” said Sarah Cooney, Executive Director. “There are still many untold stories about New Netherland and with this fellowship we want to encourage research into all aspects of New Netherland history – from archaeology to landscape architecture, art history and more.”

The successful candidate will be awarded a stipend of $20,000, paid throughout the term of their fellowship. During the candidate’s time as the Society’s Junior Fellow, they will contribute a short-form article to the Society’s journal, de Halve Maen, and a long-form article to the Society’s to-be-established Holland Society Papers journal. The candidate will also present a lecture on the candidate’s topic of research to Holland Society Members in-person at the Society’s New York Headquarters. Reasonable travel costs will be provided.

A Board of Senior Fellows has been established to moderate the application process. The Board consists of Deborah Hamer, Director of the New Netherland Institute; Firth Fabend, historian and novelist; Andrea Mosterman, historian of early America and the Atlantic World; Susanah Romney, associate professor in Early Dutch Empire; and Rob Snyder, Manhattan borough historian.

The Junior Fellowship program is open only to candidates based in the United States. The fellow is not required to reside in the New York metro area during the term of the fellowship. Applications, to be written in English, must be submitted to fellowship@hollandsociety.org by July 1, 2024. Three references are required for all applicants and are also due by July 1. Late applications will not be accepted.

After review by the Board of Senior Fellows, the award will be announced by August 1st and must be accepted by the end of the month.
